Mahama Refugee Camp

Mahama Refugee Camp is a refugee camp located in Kirehe District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, near Akagera River which is the border with Tanzania and Rwanda. In 2016, it had over 50,000 residents, making it the size of one of Rwanda's ten largest cities. In 2021, there were over 100,000 refugees in Rwanda and most of them were here.

Based on UNHCR Report published on February 2023; 58248 refugees live in Mahama refugee camp and 160 hectares of land were allocated to host refugees. MINEMA administers the camp and is responsible for security and protection of the refugees in coordination with UNHCR.

50.2% of the camp's population is younger than 18 years old. This population is composed by Burundians, Congoleses and a small number of Sudaneses
